In December 2009, just a year after Kirsten took over as the head coach of the Indian team, India had reached number one in the Test rankings for the first time. He later achieved the same feat with South Africa. Kirsten told Eye News: “I’ve been contemplating this (to become England’s head coach) from the beginning because it’s a huge honour.”
This is not the first time that the former South African batsman has expressed such a wish. Earlier on two occasions, he was the main contender to become the coach of England. “I have been in the race for the post twice (2015 and 2019) so far. I have made it clear from the beginning that I am not committed to assume this responsibility in all formats. Now international cricket boards are thinking of having separate coaches for different formats, so that can be considered.
