The Delhi Assembly’s Peace and Harmony Committee has asked Facebook India to produce one of its senior representatives on November 2 regarding the riots in North East Delhi in February last year.
The statement said that since Facebook has lakhs of users in Delhi, it has been summoned pursuant to the Supreme Court’s July 8, 2021. The court had said that the committee has the power to direct the members and non-members to appear before it.
The committee would like to discuss the important role of social media in preventing the spread of false and malicious messages that can create disharmony and affect peace, the statement said.
In July, Facebook India had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the summons issued by the committee. According to PTI, the top court, while dismissing the petition, said that the Delhi Assembly and its committee have the power to issue summons for production to its members and outsiders on the basis of their prerogative.
The Delhi Assembly had in February this year summoned Facebook India director Ajit Mohan to appear before the committee, against which Facebook India had filed a petition in the Supreme Court.
