Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday used a hydrogen car to go to Parliament. Since then people have been talking about the hydrogen car. The car that Gadkari used was made by Toyota. Its name is Toyota Mirai. Hydrogen cars also do not spread pollution like electric cars. Since they do not use petrol and diesel, electric and hydrogen cars are being considered as the cars of the future.
The Narendra Modi government at the Center is also emphasizing on the use of hydrogen as energy. The question is, how does a hydrogen car work, has it come in the market, how is it different from electric cars?
How is the technology of hydrogen car?
Combustion engines are not used in hydrogen cars. Fuel cells are used in these. Gas from the car’s tank enters the fuel cell. It combines with oxygen to form water through a chemical reaction. This chemical reaction produces electricity. The car runs on this electricity. You can say that even hydrogen cars run on electricity. In this, hydrogen is used to make electricity.

How different is a hydrogen car from electric cars?
Hydrogen car and electric car (EV) both do not pollute. Hydrogen cars can travel long distances once the tank is full. Second, it takes only a few minutes to fill with hydrogen. On the other hand, an electric car does not cover very long distances even after being fully charged. Second, it takes a long time to charge its battery.
Big investment in hydrogen car technology
You can call hydrogen cars the cars of the future. The reason for this is that work is going on on this technology right now. But, with the pace at which work is going on, many hydrogen cars are expected to hit the market in the next 3 to 4 years. Large auto companies of the world are investing a lot in this technology. Toyota and Hyundai are at the forefront of this. Experts believe that by 2030, the cost of hydrogen cars is expected to drop to about half.
At present, hydrogen cars of only two companies are available in the market.
At present, the sale of hydrogen cars is negligible. The reason for this is that the infrastructure for this has not been prepared. Different types of petrol pumps are needed to fill hydrogen in these cars. At present there are hardly a dozen such petrol pumps in a developed country like England. With the improvement in technology, gradually the infrastructure will also be ready for this. But, it will take time.
How much do hydrogen cars cost?
Currently, Hyundai’s Nexo and Toyota’s Mirai are available in hydrogen cars in the market. Currently, Hyundai’s Nexo will cost around Rs 70,000,00 in Rs. Toyota’s Mirai will cost around Rs 55 lakh. In comparison, the prices of electric cars in India start from Rs 12-14 lakhs. On the other hand, the work on creating infrastructure for electric cars in India is going on fast.
