Panaji: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday greeted the people of the state on Goa’s Liberation Day 2021. Goa was liberated from 450 years of Portuguese rule on 19 December 1961. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Kejriwal tweeted, “My best wishes to the people of Goa on the historic 61st Liberation Day. Salute to all those who made sacrifices in freeing Goa from colonial tyranny. Now the time has come to free Goa from corrupt politics.”
Significantly, the AAP has decided to field candidates in the assembly elections to be held next year in the state. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee also congratulated the people of the coastal state on Sunday. TMC has also announced to contest elections in Goa. Banerjee said, “My best wishes to the brothers and sisters of the state on Goa’s Liberation Day. I salute the supreme sacrifice of all our freedom fighters. On this momentous occasion, let us pledge to usher in a new dawn for our beautiful state and honor their sacrifices.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Goa to participate in various programs organized to mark the state’s Liberation Day. He will pay tribute to the martyrs at Azad Maidan in the capital Panaji. Before this, he will be a part of the ‘Sail Parade’ of the Indian Army.
In the evening, he will address the public at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium here. Elections to the 40-member Goa Legislative Assembly are to be held in February 2022. At present there is a Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state.
