Delhi AQI: In the late evening of Diwali and on Friday morning the next day (November 5), there was an effect of toxic smog in the capital Delhi and its surrounding air. Despite the ban imposed by the state government, people burst firecrackers fiercely on Diwali, due to which the air quality in Delhi and adjoining areas deteriorated. The AQI (Air Quality Index) of the city of Delhi was 382 at 4 pm on Diwali, which reached the critical zone by 8 pm. This problem increased due to low temperature and slow wind speed at night. According to news agency PTI, in the areas around Delhi such as Faridabad (AQI-424), Ghaziabad (AQI-442), Gurugram (AQI-423) and Noida (AQI-431) too, the air due to firecrackers after 9 pm. Quality got serious.
Last month, on October 27, the Delhi government had started the campaign ‘Nhi firecrackers, diyas burn’ to spread awareness about firecrackers. Under this campaign, a provision was also made to take action under the provisions of IPC and Explosives Act against those burning firecrackers. According to the government, more than 13 thousand kg of illegal firecrackers were seized under this campaign while 33 people have been arrested.

The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFER) estimates that the air quality situation is unlikely to improve today and will remain in the severe zone. According to the data of the Central Pollution Control Board monitoring all the stations in the capital Delhi, the AQI in Delhi is above 450. An AQI of 301-400 is considered very poor while an AQI between 401-500 is considered severe.

Situation more serious due to stubble burning
The situation in Delhi had already become serious due to stubble burning. Delhi’s air quality had reached the very poor category on Thursday morning itself, and the first foggy morning in this winter was on Thursday itself. The Safer System had already said that even if the firecrackers are not lit, the air quality of Delhi may go from very poor to severe on Thursday night, but firecrackers have worsened the situation. According to Safer, the AQI can also cross 500 due to firecrackers. According to SAFER, the share of stubble burning in Delhi’s pollution is about 25 percent. Today, on November 5, the effect of stubble burning can reach 35 percent and then on November 6-7, it can reach 40 percent.
