The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is trying to increase the storage of water. The work of Chikhli Water Treatment Plant is in the final stage and 100 MLD water will be pumped from Andhra Dam. Therefore, from March-April, there will be daily water supply in the city. If there is an increase in the availability of water after the next three years, then the city will be able to supply water 24 hours a day. Municipal Engineer Praveen Ladkat of the Municipal Water Supply Department informed the journalists about the water supply system at the water purification center located at Nigdi.
He said that according to the rules about 55 per cent people use twice as much water per day as compared to 135 liters per person and such people should be punished and tap connections should be broken. The period from 2008 to 2022 saw a huge increase in urbanization. A large number of flats were built. The population of the city was 10 lakh in 2001 and 17 lakh in 2011. At that time, 250 liters of water was being given per person per day, but in the last ten years the population has increased by 70 percent.

Although its total distance is 9.55 km, so this work is expensive. About Rs 250 to 300 crore is spent to bring 100 MLD of water. The Municipal Corporation gets only 40 to 45 crore rupees from water bills. Water supply is running round the clock for the last six months in Nigdi located in Sector 26 of the Authority. As per the rules, a person is allowed to use 135 liters of water per day. However, a municipal survey found that 60 per cent people were consuming 200 liters of water per day and 28 per cent were consuming 500 liters of water. In a later survey, 54 per cent people were consuming 200 liters and 18 per cent 500 liters of water. Hence, citizens use more than 135 liters of water even after 24 hours of water supply. Authorities have not further reduced water consumption.
