Cyclone Asani: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the cyclonic storm formed over North Andaman Sea crossed the Andaman Islands on Monday and is moving towards landfall near Myanmar’s port city of Thandwe. Cyclone Asani is likely to reach the Thandwe coast of Myanmar by Tuesday evening. According to IMD, this cyclonic storm had intensified into a deep depression over North Andaman Sea on Monday.
On Monday, the weather cycle over North Andaman Sea intensified from low pressure to deep pressure which was moving northwards at a speed of 13 kmph. It was centered about 120 km east-northeast of Mayabunder in Andaman Islands and 570 km south-southwest of Thandwe coast in Myanmar till 5:30 pm. Andaman administration is on alert in view of the situation.
Asani will continue to move almost northwards from Andaman Islands
According to the Meteorological Department, Cyclone Asani will continue to move almost northwards from the Andaman Islands and cross the Myanmar coast between 18°N and 19°N latitudes around Thandwe (Myanmar) in the evening of March 22 or early morning of March 23. In view of the possible threat of cyclonic storm, the local administration has evacuated people living in low-lying areas and kept them in temporary shelters.
Fishermen warned not to go to sea
Meteorologists said that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, east-central Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea will have strong winds reaching 65 to 75 kmph till Wednesday. The IMD has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea near Andaman Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department Mrityunjya Mohapatra said that Cyclone ‘Asani’ is expected to move from Andaman Islands towards Myanmar and South Bangladesh coast by this evening. He said that the cyclone is not expected to hit the Andaman Islands.
