There is a possibility that the origin of the delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus may not only be from India but also from many other places, scientists have indicated in a new research. “The first sequence of delta variants was from the Netherlands, collected in June 2020 in accordance with GISAID or the Global Initiative for Avian Flu Data Sharing,” the study said. GISAID, a global science initiative, provides open access to genomic data for the influenza virus and the coronavirus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic. This study is published in the new issue of the Journal of Autoimmunity.
To explain how the delta plus variant has a different mutation profile than the delta variant, scientists analyzed protein sequences for more than 300,000 Covid-19 samples from the two emerging variants across the world. The Delta variant is believed to be the reason behind the second wave of Covid-19 variants in India.
Using bioinformatics tools and programming, the team identified five specific mutations that are far more prevalent in delta plus variants than in delta variants, including one mutation, K417N, which is present in all delta plus variants, but Almost none of the Delta variants are there.
The authors said, “The evasion of antibodies from the virus side through specific mutations may contribute to the virus’s greater transmutability. Using structural data, we presented atomic details that show possible ways in which the virus can produce antibodies.” may and may survive, while our analysis is detailed, new mutations may emerge in these variants in the future.”
Research has shown that Delta Plus, which first emerged in India, reached the US via England and Japan. Based on the existing results, it is clear that the delta and delta plus variants have unique mutation profiles and the delta plus variant is not a simple addition of K417N to the delta variant.
The scientists said the findings provide important clues to researchers about recent structural changes in the virus and highlight the need for expanding the toolbox in the fight against Covid-19.
Austin Spratt, co-author of the study, said, “Whether it is natural antibodies that have been previously produced from Covid-19 or antibodies generated from vaccines, we are showing structurally how dangerous and clever the virus is, in this way able to mutate that antibodies are not able to recognize and defend against these new variants.”
