Due to the Corona epidemic, the situation is not normalized around the world. Talking about India, the second wave is proving to be more dangerous here and this time the shortage of oxygen and beds in the hospital is also being faced. However, apart from all this, another very serious problem has arisen – that of black fungus (mucarmycosis). Doctors say that this is a very serious problem and its cases are increasing rapidly. Dr. Uday Phadke, director (department of endocrinology and diabetes) and endocrinologist and diabetologist of Pune-based Sahyadri Hospitals, says that there are usually one or two cases of black fungus in a year and that too in patients with low resistance capacity. Due to cancer or due to organ transplant. However, now the situation is that in Pune, 30-35 cases are coming in Sahyadri Hospitals chain in just one month i.e. one case every day.
The way Black Fungus cases are increasing in India, a question arises that the corona epidemic problem is worldwide, so the way Black Fungus cases are increasing here, why not in any other country. . Financial Express Online talked about this with diabetologists / angocrinologists who treat the functioning of glands and hormones. However, it is important to note here that even before the epidemic, most cases of black fungus were in India. In India, it infects 14 per 1 lakh people, whereas in Australia it is just 0.06.

Diabetes cases are increasing more because of black fungus
The biggest reason for the high incidence of black fungus in India is that India has the highest number of diabetes cases in the world and there are about 70 million diabetic patients here. In such a situation, when they become corona, steroids are given. According to Dr. V Mohan, Chief Consultant and Chairman of a Diabetes Specialties Center based in Chennai, India has a large number of diabetic patients, due to which the cases of black fungus here are much higher than in other countries of the world. According to Dr. Mohan, diabetes is rampant in India, there are a record number of corona cases and steroids are being used for a long time which is proving very dangerous. Apart from Dr. Mohan, cases of hygiene and use of contaminated equipment are also increasing. Dr. Mohan says that corona cases are coming up so much that sanitation is not being given much attention in hospitals, due to which there is a possibility of fungus accumulating on equipment.
Cases increasing due to oxygen therapy and steroids!
Dr. Gagandeep Kang, the country’s leading vaccine expert and professor at Christian Medical College, Vellore, says she wants to know how many percent of people are getting black fungus from oxygen therapy and how many on steroids. According to Kang, the use of steroids is risky, but in the case of those who are undergoing oxygen therapy, the breathing apparatus will have to be seen. Kang believes that perhaps this is why the cases of black fungus are increasing. Kang also believes that steroids are being used more than six times due to which the resistance of the body is decreasing and it can lead to black fungus.
Treatment of black fungus in three stages
Regarding the treatment of black fungus, Dr. Phadke says that its treatment is in three stages. In the first phase, the causes of black fungus should be diluted, that is, the use of steroids should be stopped, sugar level should be checked immediately, acidosis should be checked.
After this, dead tissue should be removed aggressively through surgery, which may require many specialists. At this stage, ensure that the fungus does not spread.
After this, in the third phase, appropriate medicines should be administered for black fungus. Amphotericin B injection is currently used in its treatment. Although its shortage because its demand was not so high earlier, but in the current era, the government has also approved Sun Forma, Cipla, Bharat Serums etc. to make it. A spokesperson for the country’s largest pharmaceutical company Sun Pharma informed that production of Lambin 50 (the company’s brand name for Amphotericin B) has been increased to meet demand. But it may take two to four weeks for additional stocks to come on the market.
