A group of Congress leaders from Porvorim assembly constituency resigned on Friday morning. The group, backed by Independent MLA Rohan Khunte, claimed that the Congress was not serious about contesting the assembly elections to be held in early 2022. Former district panchayat member Gupesh Naik, who led the group from Porvorim, told reporters, “The Congress party is not showing interest in seriously contesting the upcoming Goa election. It is unlikely to succeed because of the attitude of some of its leaders.
In yet another blow to the Congress, its senior leader from South Goa, Moreno Rebello, also resigned. Rebelo’s resignation letter claimed he was upset over the party declaring sitting MLA from Curtorim constituency, Alexo Reginaldo Lourenco, as a “candidate” despite “working against the party”. Rebelo is a resident of Curtorim.

Rebello, in a letter addressed to Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar, said, “Alexo Reginaldo Lourenco, who has never participated in any party activity for the last four and a half years and on the contrary only abuses the party leaders and you Has acted against the official candidate of Curtorim in the recently held district panchayat election. Despite this, he was promoted as the working president of the party and was announced as the candidate by senior leaders during a conference held recently.
The process of resignations has started after differences emerged in the party over the understanding of the Congress with the Goa Forward Party (GFP) for the assembly elections. All India Congress Committee (AICC) Goa election in-charge P Chidambaram on Thursday said the GFP has extended support only to the Congress and refused to consider it an alliance at this stage. Senior Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao has proposed a meeting between GFP chief Vijay Sardesai and Chodankar on Saturday. Priyanka Gandhi is scheduled to address various programs and interact with youth and women during her one-day visit to Goa. (agency)
