Common Eligibility Test: India’s first Common Eligibility Test (CET) is likely to be delayed once again due to increasing cases of COVID-19 in the country. News18 has got this information quoting sources. The purpose of this test is to screen candidates for jobs in central government and public sector banks. The exam was earlier scheduled to be held in March this year to select candidates for Group B (Non-Gazetted), Group C (Non-Technical) posts in central government and public sector banks.
Less likely to be held till March
A senior official of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) told News18 that a full assessment will be done by the government to examine the possibilities of conducting the exam and decide on further steps.
“Given the prevailing situation, the chances of this happening till March are slim,” the official said. This is the second time that an ambitious project of the Narendra Modi government has been delayed due to the pandemic. Earlier it was to be held in September-October last year.

National Recruiting Agency was formed for the preliminary examination
In the year 2020, the government had set up the National Recruitment Agency, a central recruiting agency for the purpose of conducting the preliminary examination for about 4 crore candidates. These candidates apply for 1.25 lakh central government jobs every year.
Initial screening will be done through NRA
The initial screening will be done by the NRA through CET and the candidates will be shortlisted for government jobs. This work is currently done by Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and Railway Recruitment Board (RRB).

However, these agencies will continue to conduct the main exam for the final selection of the candidates selected on the basis of the score obtained in CET.
Other government jobs will also be included in the exam in the coming years, the official said.
Government has already finished the interview
The current recruitment for non-gazetted posts in the central government is at the level of class 10, class 12 and graduation. The appointment in these jobs involves two levels of examination – Preliminary and Main Examination. Earlier, it was followed by interviews, which the Modi government ended in 2016.
The objective of CET is to save the time, resources and efforts of crores of candidates who fill forms for every exam and are forced to travel long distances to appear for them.
