Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Manoj Pandey said on Thursday that China has increased deployment and military exercises in its interior areas opposite the Arunachal Pradesh region. The official said that India has also prepared contingency plans accordingly to meet all kinds of security related challenges in the region. He said there has been an increase in the number of exercises by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China in the Tibet Autonomous Region in the past few months.
Giving information about India’s overall military modernization, Lt Gen Pandey said that new combat formations called Integrated Battle Groups (IBG) have been given in-principle approval. These groups are able to act faster with a more effective approach. The IBG will consist of infantry, artillery, air defence, tank and logistics units.

The new arrangement is expected to improve the war fighting capabilities of the military, especially along the borders with China and Pakistan. Lt Gen Pandey said that the operational plan of 17 Mountain Corps has been implemented as per the plan made in 2014. He said that activities related to the annual training exercise that the PLA conducts there have seen an increase in the interior areas. Some of the reserve groups mobilized by the PLA are present in their training areas in the interior.
He said that both sides are trying to develop infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), due to which some problems arise from time to time. Lt Gen Pandey said that the deployment of forces has increased since the development of new infrastructure.
The commander said that India has taken several steps and the most important of them is to increase surveillance activities along the Line of Actual Control and interior areas through synergy of all surveillance resources from the strategic level to the tactical level.
He said that we have sufficient forces which are available in every field to deal with any kind of emergency. We are practicing dealing with various possible contingencies. On the subject of violation of various border agreements and protocols by China, Lt Gen Pandey said that talks are going on at the highest level on this matter.
Manoj Pandey said that in the context of our comprehensive guidance, in terms of strategic guidance on dealing with the situation along the Line of Actual Control, we respect mutually agreed protocols and agreements and this has been our endeavor, irrespective of other Any step taken or any action taken by the party. He said that I believe that it is being looked at on a large scale to see what happened, what are the consequences and what we need to do in future.
The commander said that the fourth hotline between the two sides has recently been activated. Let us tell you that after escalating tensions with China in eastern Ladakh last year, India had increased the overall deployment of troops along the nearly 3,400-km-long LAC along with accelerating development of infrastructure to gain strategic advantage. The Army is also conducting day and night surveillance along the LAC in the region using a fleet of remotely operated aircraft.
