Chennai Rain Updates: Heavy rains have continued in Tamil Nadu’s capital Chennai and suburban areas for the last two days, causing water-logging at many places. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 5 rescue teams in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains in many areas. Chennai, the main city of South India, has come to a complete halt due to rain.
The rain since two days has affected every sphere of life including schools, colleges and offices. Following the closure of schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet districts due to inclement weather, other districts have now issued a similar order. Sivaganga District Collector Madhusudhanan Reddy said that schools and colleges will remain closed today due to heavy rains in Sivaganga district.

According to officials, two teams have been deployed in Madurai district, one each in Chennai, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur districts and additional teams have been put on alert if needed. Officials said that all the NDRF teams deployed at 5 different locations are equipped with flood rescue equipment, search and rescue equipment including Gemini boats, communication system and PPE kits.
According to the report, at least 81 people had been evacuated and taken to the shelter till 2 pm. At the same time, at least four people have been reported dead in rain-related incidents. The railway system has also been affected a lot due to water logging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain in the state on Monday as well.
Due to cyclonic conditions during the monsoon, heavy rains lashed Chennai and adjoining areas in almost 24 hours, flooding most areas here on Sunday and sluice gates (water level) of three reservoirs of the city to drain out excess water. or the doors controlling the flow rate) were opened.
Since the onset of Northeast Monsoon in October, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry region have received around 43 per cent excess rainfall. The city has been receiving heavy to very heavy rains for the past two days after nearly six years, while other areas of Tamil Nadu have received light or moderate rains.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he had spoken to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and discussed the situation arising out of excessive rains in some parts of the state. Assured all possible help from the Center in relief and rescue work. I wish everyone well and safety.
Chief Minister Stalin along with top officials including Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu visited several submerged areas and directed officials to take prompt action to drain the flood waters. Stalin along with cabinet colleagues distributed flood aid materials including rice, milk and blankets to the people of the affected areas in temporary camps here. He directed the officials to expedite the relief and rescue work.
The government declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts on November 8 and 9. Various videos have been shown in the local media in which streets can be seen flooded with water. Due to heavy rain, the water was so much that even the cars were seen submerged. Rubber boats were used to evacuate people.
