Russia-Ukraine Crisis: The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has created a big crisis for India as well. This crisis is to evacuate thousands of Indian students trapped in Ukraine from there. After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, all flight operations from there are closed, due to which thousands of Indian students, especially medical students are trapped there in difficult and dangerous conditions. The Government of India has started all kinds of efforts under ‘Operation Ganga’ to evacuate its citizens from there. Some special flights have also come back from Ukraine with Indian students. However, in the midst of all this, a question has arisen in everyone’s mind, after all, what is it in Ukraine, that such a large number of Indian students have gone there for medical studies? Why is Ukraine so popular among Indian medical students? Let us try to know the answer-
According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science, there are about 18,095 Indian students in Ukraine and 24% of its foreign students in the year 2020 were Indians. The ministry also reported that Ukraine has the fourth largest number of undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses in Europe. The fees in the government universities there are low and they provide quality education. In comparison, the fees of private medical colleges in India are quite high. Even private medical colleges which are not famous, their fees are also higher than the universities of Ukraine.
In such a situation, Indian students who cannot get admission in government medical colleges or who are unable to pay the huge fees of private medical colleges here, they turn to Ukraine.

Apart from affordable education, Ukraine is also popular among Indian medical students for two other reasons. First, there is no entrance exam for admission to medical courses in Ukraine, while students in India have to go through a very tough medical entrance exam. In such a situation, Ukraine is also a preferred option for students who are not able to take medical entrance here. The second reason is that medical education in Ukraine is conducted in the English language. In such a situation, the students going there do not have to learn Ukrainian or any other foreign language and do not have to give its exam.
According to a report, the average expenditure of an Indian student for a six-year MBBS course and accommodation in Ukraine ranges between Rs 20 to 30 lakh. On the other hand, if a student in India does a four and a half year course from a private medical college, then his expenditure with donation can go up to Rs 1 crore.
Anup Devtale, a second year MBBS student at Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU), located in Chernivtsi city of Ukraine, told Hindustan Times, “I come from a rural area in Sangli district. It was my dream to become a doctor. My parents are farmers. We don’t have financial condition to pay huge fees for private medical colleges in India. So I decided to take admission in Ukraine. I came back to India last week amid Russian attack.
Dr Sudarshan Gherade, President, Foreign Medical Association of India (FMAI) said, “Medical colleges in Ukraine and Russia are also recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO). The Medical Council of India (MCI) also recognizes these degrees. However, for medical practice in India, these students have to pass another exam after coming here. These medical degrees are recognized worldwide; In particular, the Medical Council of the European Union and the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom help these students in further opportunities.”
