New Delhi: Bhupinder Singh alias Honey, the arrested nephew of Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, has ‘confessed’ to the activities related to sand mining in the border state and helped in the appointment or transfer of officers. In lieu of doing so, he had received Rs 10 crore in cash. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) made this claim in a statement issued on Monday.
Honey was arrested on February 3 by the central probe agency in connection with a money laundering probe related to alleged illegal sand mining in Punjab. On January 18, the investigating agency had conducted raids against Honey and others. During this, about Rs 7.9 crore was seized from Honey’s whereabouts, while about Rs two crore was seized from the premises of a person named Sandeep Kumar associated with him.

The ED, in its statement, said that during the raids, it recorded the statements of Kudratdeep Singh, Bhupinder Singh (Honey), Honey’s father Santokh Singh and Sandeep Kumar and from these statements it was “established” that the seized amount of Rs 10 crore was seized by Bhupinder Singh. Singh was the son of Santokh Singh. “Bhupinder Singh has confessed that he had received the confiscated money for activities related to sand mining and for helping in the appointment/transfer of officers,” the statement claimed.
The ED said Honey was summoned to appear personally before the agency on February 3 along with certain documents. According to the probe agency, “Honey appeared and gave his statement, in which, inter alia, he said that he was involved in mining related activities, but he evaded when the incriminating data was put forward.”
