Mumbai: Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil said in the state assembly on Wednesday that the Center has initiated disciplinary action against suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Parambir Singh. Singh was suspended earlier this month after his name surfaced as an accused in several extortion cases in Mumbai and Thane. Earlier, former Mumbai Police Commissioner had accused former state home minister Anil Deshmukh of corruption.
Patil gave a written reply in the lower house to a question asked by Abu Asim Azmi (of the Samajwadi Party) during the Question Hour on the first day of the winter session of the state legislature on Wednesday. “The Center has initiated disciplinary action against Parambir Singh under the All India Service Rules,” the minister said. He said that the state home department had received a recommendation regarding the suspension of 28 police officers. He said that the Home Department had received information about the involvement of 30 police officers including Parambir Singh in serious crimes.

Patil said the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) had proposed his suspension to ensure a fair and independent investigation. He said the Home Department has sought details of the allegations against him. These officers include five Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and five Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACSPs).
The minister said that so far Parambir and Parag Manare (who served as DCP) have been suspended. Meanwhile, during a discussion on a question related to illegal sand smuggling, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat told the House that the state government would “fix an ‘offset’ price of Rs 600 for the auction.”
There are also plans to consider reducing the time taken to decide on the auction and implementing provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) after consultation with the Law and Judiciary Department, he said. He said that till now a fine of Rs 1.21 crore has been recovered for illegal sand smuggling.
