Lucknow: Contrary to the speculations, Western Uttar Pradesh did not prove to be Waterloo for the BJP. The West shattered the expectations of the opposition and once again laid the foundation for BJP’s victory. Fears of possible damage to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in western Uttar Pradesh have proved to be unfounded due to farmers’ resentment, Jat-Muslim unity and a powerful opposition alliance. The results of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections have indicated that the BJP will continue to have a strong hold in western Uttar Pradesh.
During the election campaign, political analysts were pointing to a major loss for the BJP in western Uttar Pradesh. The BJP was projected to suffer losses due to non-payment of sugarcane farmers’ dues, large-scale participation of western farmers in the agitation against agricultural laws that lasted for more than a year, and the powerful Jat community’s once again growing closeness to Muslims. .
