New DelhiWomen’s Day is celebrated every year on 13 February to mark the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, freedom fighter and Nightingale of India. The great freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu played an active role in the national movement of India. Sarojini Naidu was born on 13 February 1879 in Hyderabad. He started writing poems at the age of 12.
Naidu passed the matriculation examination at the age of just 12. She went to England for higher education at the age of 16. There, he attended King’s College, London and Girton College. She was married at the age of 19 to Dr. Govind Rajalu Naidu. He studied English at home. Sarojini could not complete her studies, but she was a genius in English.

The Speech That Influenced Sarojini
Gopal Krishna Gokhale’s speech in Calcutta in 1906 had greatly influenced Naidu’s entry into politics. She raised her voice against the injustice being done against women in India. Along with this, he also played an important role in the movement for India’s independence. Sarojini Naidu first met Mahatma Gandhi in 1914 and was impressed by his work. Since then she agreed to die for the freedom of the country. He was made the President of Congress in 1925.
Kesar-e-Hind
Sarojini was awarded ‘Kesar-e-Hind’ by the British Government in 1928. This medal was given to him for his work during the plague epidemic in India. But, he returned the honor after getting agitated over the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. India’s Nightingale Sarojini also fought a lot for the rights of women. She became the first woman governor of India.
died of heart attack
Sarojini suffered a heart attack on 2 March 1949 in Lucknow and died. Celebrating National Women’s Day in India was started from 13th February 2014, from the day of 135th birth anniversary of the Nightingale of India Sarojini Naidu.
