WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is pardoning hundreds of people that had been convicted of use and easy possession of marijuana on federal lands and within the District of Columbia, the White House mentioned Friday, in his newest spherical of government clemencies meant to rectify racial disparities within the justice system.
Biden can also be granting clemency to 11 folks serving what the White House known as “disproportionately long” sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.
Biden mentioned his actions would assist make the “promise of equal justice a reality.”
“Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities,” Biden mentioned. “Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.”
The categorical pardon issued Friday builds on his categorical pardon issued simply earlier than the 2022 midterm elections that made hundreds convicted of easy possession on federal lands eligible for pardons. The White House mentioned hundreds extra could be eligible beneath Friday’s motion.
Biden reiterated his name on governors and native leaders to take comparable steps to erase marijuana convictions.
