West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) President Mamata Banerjee tweeted on Sunday that former Union Minister Shatrughan Sinha will be the Trinamool candidate for the Lok Sabha by-election from Asansol and Babul Supriyo for the assembly by-election from Ballygunge.
The TMC chief tweeted, “Happy to announce on behalf of All India Trinamool Congress that former Union Minister and renowned actor Shatrughan Sinha will be our candidate for the by-elections to the Asansol Lok Sabha seat.”
In another tweet, Mamta Banerjee wrote, “Former Union Minister and famous singer Babul Supriyo will be our candidate in the by-election of Ballygunge assembly seat. Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, Jai Maa-Mati- Manush.

The seat fell vacant after Supriyo, a two-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, quit the party last year and joined the TMC. At the same time, the Ballygunge assembly seat fell vacant after the death of state minister Subrata Mukherjee.

The Election Commission on Saturday said bypolls to one Lok Sabha seat and four assembly seats in four states would be held on April 12. With the presidential election due this year, by-elections will also fill vacancies in the electoral college that elects the president.
According to a statement by the Election Commission, the counting of votes will take place on April 16. Bypolls will also be held in Ballygunge in West Bengal, Khairagarh in Chhattisgarh, Bochahan in Bihar and Kolhapur North in Maharashtra. Notification for the five by-elections will be issued on March 17.
