PuneSocial activist Anna Hazare has called off her proposed hunger strike against the Maharashtra government’s decision to allow the sale of liquor at supermarkets and kirana shops and said the state government has assured that She will look into the views of the citizens before proceeding with this policy. A ‘gram sabha’ was held on Sunday at Ralegansiddhi village of Hazare in Ahmednagar district.
Hazare later said, “I told the villagers that now the state government has decided to place the cabinet decision before the citizens for their suggestions and objections and only after their approval the government will take the final decision.” That’s why I have decided to suspend tomorrow’s hunger strike.”

A few days ago, Hazare had written to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asking him that the people of the state demanded that the policy on allowing the sale of liquor in supermarkets and kirana shops be withdrawn. In a meeting in his village on Sunday, Hazare said that if there are enough bars, permit rooms and shops to sell liquor, then why does the government want to sell it in supermarkets and kirana shops.
He questioned whether the government wanted to spread this addiction. The social worker claimed, “During discussions with the Maharashtra government officials, I told them that I do not feel like living in the state, after which the government started reconsidering its decision.” (agency)
