Punjab Election Results 2022: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as the largest party in Punjab. Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party seems to be getting around 92 seats. In the storm of AAP, the big leaders of all other parties including Congress and Akali have been blown away. Now the question is, is the Aam Aadmi Party ready to join the list of national parties in India?
AAP’s ‘revolutionary’ victory in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections has marked a turning point in the future direction of the ruling party of Delhi. After the national capital, Punjab will be the second state where the Aam Aadmi Party is going to form the government.
What is National Party?
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI) data, currently only seven parties including Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have national party status.
For a party to get the status of a national party, certain conditions are fixed, on fulfillment of which a party gets the status of being a national.
National party status is given to any party when it wins 2% of Lok Sabha seats from at least three different states.
Or if the party is recognized as a state party in four states, then the ECI gives it the status of a national party.
In addition, in the general election to the Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha, the party has to secure 6% of the votes in any four or more states and in addition, it has to win four Lok Sabha seats to become a national party.
On fulfilling at least one of these three conditions, a party gets the status of being national.
Which are the national parties in India?
As per the data provided by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the national parties of India are as follows-
-Indian National Congress (INC)
-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
-All India Trinamool Congress (AITC)
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
-Communist Party of India (CPI)
– Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM)
-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
-National People’s Party (NPP)
AAP likely to become national party
One of the criteria for becoming a national party is that the party has at least 6% of the valid vote share in any of four or more states in the Lok Sabha or state assembly elections. In the last Delhi Assembly elections, Kejriwal’s party got 54% vote share. Presently AAP has 42% vote share in Punjab and 6.77% vote share in Goa. While in Uttarakhand, AAP has a vote share of 3.4% so far and only 0.3% in Uttar Pradesh.
Talking about winning at least four Lok Sabha seats from any state, AAP currently has one seat in the form of Bhagwant Mann. However, AAP has high hopes from the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections to be held later this year.

AAP has got a new identity in Delhi, Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand. However, to be recognized as a nationalist party, the Kejriwal-led party needs to win at least 2% of the seats in the Lok Sabha elections from at least three different states.
Aam Aadmi Party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal, buoyed by the massive mandate in the Punjab Assembly elections, said on Thursday that the revolution that came in Punjab will now reach the entire country. Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal congratulated Bhagwant Mann, his AAP’s chief ministerial candidate in Punjab, calling him his “younger brother”.
