Amit Shah on AFSPA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a big announcement for the northeastern states on Thursday. He said that after several decades in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur, the areas covered by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) have been reduced.
However, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs said that this does not mean that the AFSPA has been completely withdrawn in these states affected by terrorism, but it will remain in force in some areas of the three states.
Reduction in areas under AFSPA is a result of the improved security situation and fast-tracked development due to the consistent efforts and several agreements to end insurgency and bring lasting peace in North East by PM @narendramodi government.

Amit Shah said that thanks to PM Modi for this. With the help of PM Modi’s unwavering commitment, our Northeast region, neglected for decades, is now witnessing a new era of peace, prosperity and unprecedented development. I congratulate the people of the Northeast on this momentous occasion.
What does AFSPA mean?
AFSPA empowers the security forces of the country to conduct operations and make arrests without the issuance of a warrant. Also gives protection from litigation if someone is killed by security forces.
Demonstrations have been taking place in the Northeast as well as in Jammu and Kashmir demanding the withdrawal of this law.
