At least 24 people have died and many others fell ill after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Bihar’s Gopalganj and West Champaran districts in the past two days. However, the administration of both the districts is yet to confirm the cause of the deaths. The Telhua Liquor tragedy is the third such incident in North Bihar in the last 10 days.
According to news agency PTI, eight people died after allegedly consuming alcohol in Telhua village of Bettiah, the headquarters of West Champaran district, on Thursday (November 4 on Diwali day), while six more were killed by district administration officials. On Thursday itself, the death toll in another incident of consumption of suspected spurious liquor in Gopalganj increased to 16.

Bihar minister Janak Ram, who reached Gopalganj, told reporters that I have visited the houses of those people who have died allegedly due to drinking spurious liquor. This could be a conspiracy to defame the NDA government.
At the same time, Gopalganj senior police officer Anand Kumar said that in the last two days some people have died under mysterious circumstances in Muhammadpur village of the district. The cause of his death could not be confirmed as the postmortem report is awaited. Three teams are probing the matter. Local police said some of the bodies had been cremated by their families.
Four people died on Thursday while they were undergoing treatment and two others died on the way to the hospital, he said. According to the report, prima facie these deaths seem to have happened due to the consumption of some poisonous substance. The police have registered a case. Four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident that took place between Tuesday and Wednesday (November 2 and 3), police said.
Opposition attacked Nitish Kumar
Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav alleged that the state government had failed to stop the sale and supply of spurious liquor in the prohibition state. He said that the police was disposing of the dead bodies without conducting the postmortem of the dead. Is Nitish Kumar not responsible for these deaths, making tall claims on prohibition?
Tejashwi said in a tweet that when you drink the wrong thing, you will go, Nitish ji, in the last three days, more than 50 deaths have occurred due to spurious liquor. The Chief Minister himself, the administration, the mafia and the smugglers keep threatening to teach a hard lesson to the drinkers instead of taking action against the police.
The RJD leader further said that two trucks of liquor were recovered from inside the school of the BJP minister who is standing next to him when the Chief Minister is giving a rhetorical discourse on the mess. It is also mentioned in the police FIR. Bihar Police has not been able to arrest the minister’s nominated brother till date. This is the truth of their alleged prohibition.
Bihar Minister Shahnawaz Hussain on the deaths allegedly due to consumption of spurious liquor in the state said that it is a sad incident. A thorough investigation will be done. Those found guilty of supplying spurious liquor will not be spared. The Nitish Kumar government had on 5 April 2016 banned the manufacture, trade, storage, transport, sale and consumption of liquor in the state. The Chief Minister had appealed to the people to cooperate in this mission, as alcohol is bad for health and society.
