Covid-19 in India: The Indian government has described the report of deaths from COVID in India published in the English newspaper New York Times as ‘baseless’ and concocted. The Ministry of Health and the NITI Aayog referred to a report by the New York Times, in which 42 lakh deaths from Corona in India were expressed. The newspaper claimed that the death toll in India has been calculated less and the actual number is 14 times more than the figures shown. The Health Ministry has said that the cases of corona in the country have continued to decline for the past 20 days. Whereas, 24 states have reported a significant decrease in cases.
NITI Aayog member VK Paul said the New York Times report was not backed by any evidence and was based on spoiled estimates. He said that it is possible that infection cases may be many times more than positive cases, but it cannot be done in terms of death. He emphasized that a robust tracking system is working to monitor the death toll and that the ‘so-called prestigious newspaper’ should not have been published like this.
What was the New York Times report
The New York Times estimated the infection to be 26 times more than the actual infection rate in the report. The death rate from infection was also estimated at 0.60 percent. According to the report, 70 million people were infected and 42 lakh deaths were estimated in bad conditions in India. These estimates were made in view of the second wave of Corona and the country’s poor health system. In India, the help of more than a dozen experts was taken to estimate the correct figures of death. These experts divided the epidemic in India into three situations, such as normal condition, bad condition, very bad situation.
What does the Indian government have to say
Paul, the head of India’s COVID Task Force, said that there may be a delay in the registration of death cases, but no such state has the intention of the Center. It is not known on what basis the deaths were determined. We have a strong system of tracking deaths. If I apply the same three-fold criteria to New York, there will be 50 thousand deaths, but they say that these are 16 thousand.
VK Paul said that this analysis was done wrongly. This is the gift of those corrupt thinking people, who gathered information on the phone and prepared this report. At the same time, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Love Agarwal also said that the New York Times report is baseless.
