The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the restoration of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLAD) fund. The fund was suspended last year in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that the scheme has been restored for the remaining period of the financial year 2021-22. This scheme will continue till 2025-26.
Thakur said that for the remaining period of 2021-22, the fund would be released in one installment at the rate of Rs.2 crore per MP. He said that from 2022-23 to 2025-26, an amount of Rs 2.5 crore would be released to each MP in two installments at the rate of Rs 5 crore per annum.
In April last year, the government suspended MPLAD during 2020-21 and 2021-22 and said the funds would be used to manage health services and tackle the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Under this scheme, MPs can recommend development programs up to Rs 5 crore every year in their constituencies.
