Malaysian news agency Bernama reported in a report that to deal with the lack of electricity, the authorities have cracked down on illegal crypto miners. In Malaysia, the power grid is usually overburdened in areas where the number of crypto miners is high. Malaysian power distribution company Tenaga Nasional Berhad has started working with the Criminal Investigation Department to nab illegal crypto mining centers. Malaysian police have asked citizens to be careful in renting out properties. Citizens have been advised to inform the police if they suspect crypto mining activities in their immediate vicinity.
Crypto mining has increased in countries like Russia, Iran and Kazakhstan since China banned crypto activities last year. Due to this, the problem of shortage of electricity is also happening in these countries. Last year, the supply of electricity was affected due to bitcoin mining in the US state of Texas. This caused a lot of trouble to the people of Texas.
Stronghold Digital Mining, a cryptocurrency mining firm based in Pennsylvania, US, uses coal waste to power hundreds of its supercomputers. The aim is to use a byproduct without harming the energy network. For this the firm has found an alternative way of doing power generation. The company generates electricity by using coal ash left over from decades old power generation plants. Recently, eight US lawmakers asked bitcoin mining firms to state how much electricity they use for this work.
