Salinas said in a tweet. ‘The rumours are true. Electra is the first (retail) store in Mexico that allows you to buy with bitcoin.
The purchase will be made through BitPay, a US-based bitcoin payment service provider.
A spokesperson for Grupo Salinas did not immediately comment.
Salinas, one of the richest people in Mexico, is the owner of the Banco Azteca banking business. In June he said he was working to become the first bank in Mexico to accept bitcoin.
Bank of Mexico Governor Alejandro Diaz de León, like some other central bankers, has not shown a positive attitude towards bitcoin. He has cautioned against bitcoin as a high-risk investment and poor store value.
El Salvador, on the other hand, made history this year as the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar. Mexico’s low-cost airline Volaris Volaris announced that it will accept bitcoin in El Salvador.
The year 2021 has been very important for the world of cryptocurrency. While a large number of people started investing in cryptocurrencies, crypto scams also made headlines throughout the year. In a recent report, research firm Chainalysis revealed that over $7.7 billion (about Rs 58,697 crore) of investors were scammed by cryptocurrency this year. The most common form of scam was the classic rug pull, where developers launch a scam project. Trap investors in it and escape on their own.
