The sharp increase in the prices of onions and tomatoes since the last one month has spoiled the kitchen budget of the common people. This is becoming a headache for the government as it has raised fears of rising retail inflation. Inflation may have an impact on the purchases of the coming festive season. Onion is being sold in Delhi for Rs 50 to 55 per kg, while the price of tomato has reached Rs 70 to 80 per kg. Tomato prices have increased by 71 to 143 percent since April. In the last one month, its prices have increased by 300 percent.
Rain in tomato growing states reduced supply
During the last one week, tomato consignments coming from Himachal and Haryana have been affected. Pre-monsoon rains in Himachal ruined a lot of tomato crop. Because of this, this tomato has come less in the market. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are the major producers and suppliers of tomatoes and onions. But the rains here in September ruined its crop. There is a delay in the arrival of the new tomato crop from Maharashtra and Karnataka. Therefore, it will not be worth it for the next two-three months.

Transportation of vegetables expensive due to increase in diesel prices
Tomato rates are running at Rs 30-40 per kg in Bengaluru, but due to the rise in diesel prices, transportation is getting expensive. Because of this, by the time it reaches Delhi, it becomes Rs 70-80 per kg. In Delhi, onion is being sold at Rs 25 to Rs 35 a kg in the wholesale market, but its price has reached Rs 50 to Rs 60 a kg in the retail market. Onion in Delhi comes from Nashik, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat. One reason for the increase in the price of vegetables is also a sharp increase in the price of diesel. In the last few months, the cost of transportation of vegetables coming from different states to Delhi has increased by 18 per cent due to increase in the price of diesel. Earlier, a bag of tomatoes coming from Maharashtra to Delhi i.e. 25 to 30 kg crate used to cost 150 to 170 rupees but now it has increased to 200 to 300 rupees.
