LIC Investments: LIC’s money is not only invested in listed companies but also in unlisted companies. Apart from this, LIC has also invested in Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs). This has been disclosed in the prospectus filed with SEBI. As per the data available till 30 September 2021, LIC has invested Rs 2866.14 crore in unlisted companies which is 0.8 per cent of its total investment on standalone basis. According to the IPO prospectus, in the first half of the current financial year, April-September 2021, LIC’s investment in Infrastructure Investment Trusts is Rs 63.04 crore, which is 0.00 per cent of the total investment of policyholders and shareholders on a standalone basis. Through InvITs, individual/institutional investors can invest directly in infrastructure but the returns are less as compared to other asset classes.

Equity investment 4% of the market cap of NSE
Talking about equity, LIC’s total investment in April-September 2021 was about Rs 9.78 lakh crore, which is about 27.8 percent of its total investment (including policyholders and shareholders). More than 90 percent equity investment of policyholders is in stocks included in Nifty 200 and BSE 200. According to Crisil’s report, the money LIC has invested in equities was 4 per cent of the total market cap of NSE at the end of September 2021.

According to primeinfobase.com, in the first six months of the current financial year, April-September 2021, LIC made a profit of Rs 23,242.53 crore through the sale of its investments, which is 58 percent of the profit achieved in FY 2021. LIC had earned a profit of Rs 39,809.6 crore in the financial year 2021. LIC is the largest company in the country and its investment in equity is also the highest i.e. LIC has the highest investment in equity among all insurance companies. LIC’s market share was 77 percent at the end of December 2021. Overall LIC has 37.50 percent investment in government securities, 24.78 percent in equity securities, 24.61 percent in state government securities and 8.07 percent in corporate bonds.
