Drought Impact on Economy: Monsoon has arrived in many states of the country and it is also raining heavily. The Meteorological Department has forecast that there will be good rains this year. On the other hand, a report has been issued by the United Nation Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) regarding drought. According to this report, even though the contribution of agriculture to the country’s economy is decreasing, in the event of drought, there is a loss of 2-5 percent of GDP.
The Global Assessment Report (GAR 2021) on Drought states that the problem of water scarcity is becoming increasingly serious and this problem has become global, not local. People are migrating due to lack of water and on the other hand desert areas are increasing rapidly. UNDRR report has studied the Deccan plateau part in India.
150 crore people affected by drought in this century
The report said that Tamil Nadu was hit by a severe drought in the recent past, due to which industry production fell by 5 per cent, while the service sector was affected by 3 per cent. UNDRR chief Mami Mizutori said that the problem of drought is going to emerge as the next epidemic, for which there is no cure. Drought has directly affected 150 crore people all over the world in this century and this problem is going to get worse in the coming days.
The problem of drought is more serious in the Deccan plateau region.
The report said that the Deccan Plateau region experiences drought once in every three years, due to which there is a large-scale migration. Every year there are reports from Maharashtra and Karnataka in which many villages become vacant. Out of the population of thousands, only a few people remain in the village.

It has been said in this report that in the next few years most of the countries of the world will have a serious problem of drought. In such a situation, the government and industry have been advised to take necessary steps in time. As industrialization and urbanization accelerate, the demand for water will increase, but the supply will always be less.
