Pop tradition icon and former Beatles legend Ringo Starr made an look at Berklee College of Music on Thursday to obtain an honorary diploma throughout a tribute live performance and ceremony.
The occasion featured performances from Berklee college students, introductory remarks from President Erica Muhl and an acceptance speech from the honoree himself.
“It’s a huge honor to have and accept this award,” Starr stated. “In a way, [my life] is like a dream fairytale. I wanted to be a drummer…it was my big dream, and my dream is still unfolding.”
In an impromptu second throughout his speech, Starr stepped behind the drum package to play a few customary patterns that he asks college students to aim of their first lesson.
“If they can’t do that,” Starr stated, “I politely hold them by the arm and say, ‘Maybe piano is for you.’”
Starr had been awarded the doctorate in music from Berklee on the 2022 graduation ceremony in early May however wasn’t capable of be part of his fellow honorees and the graduating class for the festivities.
Thursday’s occasion opened with a piano medley of Starr’s basic songs and vocal performances, together with “Photograph” and “With a Little Help From My Friends,” adopted later by full band renditions of “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Not Enough Love in the World,” all organized and carried out by Berklee college students.
Gregg Bissonette, drummer and touring member of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band and longtime buddy of the rock & roll nice, conveyed a message of congratulations to Starr earlier than welcoming him to the stage.
“Over the course of a career that has literally changed the direction of rock music multiple times, Ringo has been hailed as one of the most innovative, distinctly musical and influential drummers in the world,” Berklee President Erica Muhl stated. “Ringo hasn’t just contributed to our modern concept of a rock and roll drummer; he is the original architect of the genre-busting foundations upon which so many legends now stand.”
