Japanese automobile manufacturer, Yamaha recently shared its plans to develop an EV scooter for the Indian market. Now a new report suggests that the company will think about the launch only after the government’s policy for EVs is decided and there will be more clarity on their roadmap in the country. The automobile maker essentially wants to ensure that the government plans to set up the basic infrastructure required for electric vehicles, including adequate charging stations, battery swapping hubs and so on.

However, Yamaha has not given any information about the launch yet. According to a report by Autocar India, Yamaha Motors is expecting a stable roadmap from the government for the adoption of EVs in India before launching its electric vehicle. They are looking at the basic structure, features for EVs and are confident that the government is serious about EVs, which was seen from the revised FAME II policy.
The objective of FAME II scheme is to promote electrification of public and shared transport through subsidy. Around 7,090 e-buses, 5 lakh e-three wheelers, 55,000 e-4 wheeler passenger cars and 10 lakh e-two wheelers are likely to be supported through subsidies, which will bring down the cost of electric vehicles in India.
The electric scooter market has seen considerable growth in the recent years and is expected to grow as giants like TVS and Bajaj have already launched their EVs, while Hero and Suzuki have also announced their own 2-wheeler EVs. . Also, there are some promising EV startups like Ather that have shown promising consumer response in Tier 1 cities.
Yamaha is manufacturing the EC-05 for the Taiwanese market in collaboration with GoGoro. GoGoro is a Taiwanese platform with an elaborate battery-swapping network. GoGoro has partnered with Hero MotoCorp for the battery swapping network and development of new scooters based on the GoGoro platform.
Yamaha recently launched the Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid Low in India, which is available in both disc and drum brake variants. It gets a ‘Smart Motor-Generator (SMG)’ which offers a silent engine start along with the hybrid system.
