Apple has roped in Ulrich Kranz, a former BMW executive and recently detached CEO and co-founder of EV startup Canu, for its electric car project. H will reportedly work on the Silicon Valley giant’s electric car under Doug Field, a former Tesla executive.
According to The Verge, Kranz was one of the executives who helped launch BMW’s all-electric i3 hatchback and hybrid i8 sports car. Shortly after leaving the German automaker in late 2016, he and BMW partner Stefan Krauss were tapped to help transform struggling EV startup Faraday Future.
Kranz, Krause and a few other expats from BMW and other old automakers came up with an all-electric van, which they planned to sell on a subscription-only basis. He disclosed this in 2019.
The van was designed around a compact, modular platform, which included the battery pack, electric motor and all of the vehicle’s electronics, which Canu was hoping to sell or license to other manufacturers. As The Verge exclusively reported earlier this year, the Canoo EV platform pitch was so lucrative that Apple began talks with the startup in early 2020.
The report said that talks between the two companies eventually broke down, however, with Canu preferring to invest, while Apple was interested in the acquisition. Canu also had an agreement with Hyundai to build vehicles based on the platform, but the startup has since walked away from that deal.
