Kia is recalling more than 4,40,000 cars and SUVs from the US market for the second time over a potential engine fire problem. The South Korean auto major has revealed that the recall campaign includes models like the Optima sedan developed between 2013 and 2015 and the Sorrento SUV designed between 2014 and 2015.
Kia has asked the owners of the potentially affected vehicles to park them outside and away from the buildings as the fire may occur even if the engine is not running. These vehicles were first recalled back in 2020 due to brake fluid leaks. The brake fluid leaking at that time affected the control system, causing an electrical short circuit, which increased the risk of fire even when the vehicle was standing.
Recall notifications will be sent to customers from July 2
As stated by Kia, its dealers will set up a new fuse after inspecting the system and replace them if needed. Kia will start sending recall notification letters to affected vehicle owners from July 2. According to documents posted by US security regulators, the new fuse will come with a lower amperage rating, which will reduce the possibility of a fire.
6 fire incidents so far
Kia claims that so far there have been 6 fire incidents in which Kia models are affected. These include four Optima sedans and two Sorrento SUVs. As the automaker says, these affected vehicles had reported a separate melting problem. At the same time, AP also reports, one of the Kia dealers said that there was a problem with the Optima sedan which had previous recall fixes. However, no person was injured or any affected vehicle crashed due to fire accidents, claims the automaker.
