American electric vehicle maker Tesla is all set to enter the Indian market with its Tesla Model 3 car, which is expected to go on sale by the end of 2021. Apart from this, the audience has also seen the model undergoing road testing on Indian roads ahead of the launch.
Elon Musk’s auto company will set up its office in India by the end of this year and will start with only one model (Tesla Model 3 car) for the time being. It has already registered the Indian subsidiary as Tesla India Motors & Energy in Bengaluru (Karnataka). Meanwhile, the head office will be set up in Mumbai and dealerships in some major cities.
The Tesla Model 3, the entry-level model in the brand’s line-up, is offered globally with four battery options, which include 54kWh, 62kWh, 75kWh and 82kWh. The 0-100kpmh sprint time ranges from 3.2 seconds to 5.6 seconds, while the model can run from 354kms to 523kms on a full charge. We expect Tesla to start retail sales of the Model 3 by the end of 2021.
A video of the road test for the Blue Dual Motor (AWD) Tesla Model 3 in India was posted by The Fat Biker. According to the report, the vehicle being tested had standard 18-inch wheels and an aero body kit. Globally, the Tesla Model 3 is equipped with a 54 kWh battery pack for the Standard Range and Standard Range Plus variants and an 82 kWh battery pack for the Long Range and Long Range Performance variants. Depending on the variant, this vehicle gives a range of 381 km to 614 km.

The Model 3 is likely to be priced between Rs 55-70 lakh at the time of launch in India. It is not yet clear whether Tesla will launch the expensive AWD variant of the Model 3 in India.
Tesla is only testing the waters with the Model 3, with the report saying that an “Indian Special” Model 3 will later be manufactured in China and then imported into the domestic market. It is said that it will opt for either Completely Built-up (CBU) or Completely Knocked Down (CKD), though this has not been confirmed.
CKD would require Tesla to set up an assembly plant in India. Thus speculation is rife that the CBU may be first taken to “measure market demand”.
