M. Murthy, General Secretary, Renault Nissan India Thozhilalar Sangam (RNITS), said, “The Directorate of Industrial Safety inspected the plant after 4.30 pm when we were not there. We wanted to put our views before the inspection team.” According to him, the management is not talking with the union despite the request and hence it is a matter of court.
Difficult to strictly follow the rules of social distancing
According to IANS, an employee at Ford India, on the condition of anonymity, said, “No automobile plant can function if social distancing norms are strictly followed. For example, when one person loads the wheel, have another worker tighten the bolt. Similarly, when the seats are set inside, the other person works with them.”
A union official at Ford India said, “The Directorate of Industrial Safety had visited the plant but did not discuss with the union officials.” Similarly, state government officials had inspected the mega car plant of Hyundai Motor India, a union leader said. The production capacity of the three plants differs to a large extent.
Court issued order on RNITS case
The court had issued its order while hearing a case against Renault Nissan Automotive by RNITS for non-compliance of COVID-19 safety protocols during the operation of the plant. Earlier this month, the company and employees’ union RNITS signed an agreement to maintain social distancing at the shop level. Both sides agreed to an empty pitch ratio of 3:1 in the trim and chassis and body shop.
RNITS President K. “Simply put, one slot in the conveyor belt will be emptied after three cars so that an employee does not need to go to the next workstation to complete his work,” Balaji Krishnan said.
Whereas Renault Nissan Automotive has two production lines. It initially implemented the 3:1 scheme in Line 2 and argued with workers that it was not applicable to Line 1 where models such as the Sunny, Kicks and Duster are assembled. When the court clearly stated that the management was in violation of the agreement signed with the employees union, the management decided to abide by the agreement. Murthy said the production has come down by only 25 per cent.
The next hearing of the case will be on June 14
However, during the hearing on June 8, Renault’s counsel told the court that the company was not considered to be any of the other automotive units – Hyundai Motor, Ford India, BMW, Daimler and others – located here or in the country. is.
As a result, the court ordered a senior official of the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health to visit automobile plants to issue a uniform guideline for maintaining social distancing in factories.
Senior executives at other carmakers declined to comment on Renault Nissan Automotive’s strategy to link its operations to its case. “Inspection may reveal violations of other laws,” Murthy said. The next hearing of the case will be on June 14.
