Zomato
Food delivery company Zomato has joined the ranks of Flipkart and Amazon to support sustainable last meal delivery. The company has committed to 100% adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for delivery by 2030 and has joined Climate Group’s Global Electricity Mobility Initiative – EV 100.
Zomato’s current EV fleet is a small fraction of the active fleet of its delivery partners and is positioned for deliveries in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai. The company’s founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said in a blog post that although 100% adoption of electric vehicles will not be easy but it is necessary in the long run. He explained that due to some constraints, the current adoption rate is slow.
These constraints include limited battery range, lack of charging infrastructure, high upfront cost and lack of confidence in new technology. However, the company expects the adoption rate to accelerate in the coming times, given the rapid innovation in the sector and positive incentives from the government. “We expect a rapid shift in EVs for the two-wheeler industry over time,” Goyal said.
The company is already working with EV players
He further added that his company wants to actively assist EV players, battery manufacturers and the government in the transition to electric vehicles by enabling the ecosystem. The company is already working with a few EV players to design pilot projects and create business models that can facilitate rapid transition towards sustainable delivery solutions.
The focus is on zero carbon emissions
The Climate Group is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to mobilize and sensitize corporations and governments to accelerate climate action to achieve pure-zero carbon emissions by 2050. “We want to be accountable for the impact we contribute to finding solutions to the world’s most important environmental challenges, a by-product of our own progress,” said Deepinder Goyal.
E-commerce giant Flipkart also announced last year that it would switch to fully electric vehicles by 2030 by joining Climate Group’s EV100.
