The country’s largest car manufacturing company Maruti Suzuki is planning to do something in the mid-size SUV category so that it can further increase its hold in the market.
Currently, Hyundai’s Creta and Kia’s Seltos dominate the mid-size category SUV segment in the country. Maruti’s S-Cross is also an option in this category but it has not been able to make an impact in a big way. The company is actually going to innovate in the mid-category SUV with an aim to maintain 50 per cent stake in the domestic passenger vehicle segment.
Shashank Srivast, Director, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki said, “The Vitara Brezza continues to dominate the small SUV segment, but our share in the mid-range SUV segment is very small. In this category, we have the S-Cross, which we launched in August last year with a new engine.
“We have plans for a new vehicle in the mid-SUV category but cannot speak about the plans for this vehicle,” he said. We are familiar with the reality and are eyeing the mid-range SUV. We will definitely see something new in this category.
“We have only 13.2 per cent market share in the SUV category. I think this is the problem. However, as far as the small SUV segment is concerned, we are ahead of the rest in the market.
The company’s S-Cross has not been the best in the mid-size SUV category, he added. The company’s overall market share in this category is deteriorating due to our poor performance in the fast-growing SUV segment. He said that it is very important for the company to make a big move in the mid SUV category to maintain 50 per cent stake in the domestic passenger vehicle segment.
