The government’s decision will boost safety in entry-level Indian cars, which currently do not feature dual front-row airbags. Hefty fines will have to be paid for not having airbags.
dual airbags
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has extended the deadline for making dual front airbags mandatory in existing car models by four months to December 31, 2021. The deadline has been extended in view of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the country. To promote passenger safety in cars, the Government of India, in March, announced the mandatory provision of dual front row airbags in all cars manufactured and sold in India.
The rule was already made mandatory for the new models from April 1, 2021. For the existing models, currently only the driver’s seat airbag is mandatory. A senior government official said the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has sought more time to implement the rules on existing models.
The mandate for dual airbags is based on the suggestions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety and was issued as an important safety feature for vehicles on Indian roads. The mandate notification states that the airbags will need to meet AIS 145 standard under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications. The mandate will boost safety in entry-level Indian cars, which currently require dual airbags in the front row. does not provide facilities. The addition of a new airbag will also have a direct impact on the prices of low-segment cars in India.
Following the government’s announcement to install all vehicles with front dual airbags, Autoliv, one of the global leaders in automotive safety systems, decided to set up shop in India. The company will set up a new inflator manufacturing plant in the country. An inflator is a device that is placed inside an airbag that is deployed during an accident. This triggers the inflation of the airbags to cushion the occupants of the car when such situations are involved.
Let us tell you that after December 31, when the new rules will come into force and if someone is caught breaking this rule, then he can be fined heavily. That is, the government has given strict instructions completely.
