Charging Points
In order to boost electric vehicle infrastructure, the National Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to set up electric vehicle charging stations in the coming days. The scheme is part of real estate development along national highways across the country. According to the report, NHAI has identified 650 properties in 22 states with an area of 3000 hectares to develop highway infrastructure.
NHAI will initiate development programs in collaboration with the private sector over the next five years. In this, 94 sites have been identified along the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, 376 sites along new highways and under-construction expressways and around 180 sites along the existing network of highways across the country. NHAI has already invited bids for 138 sites out of the selected 650 sites. It has already received many responses from private entities to help in this development project.
Electric vehicles owners will get help
Setting up EV charging stations along national highways will go a long way to EV owners in India who often worry about the limitations of using battery-powered cars for long distance travel. At present, there are very few EV charging stations along the highways to meet the needs of electric vehicle owners.
Setting up of charging stations for electric vehicles on National Highways will help in promoting electric vehicle culture in the country. Recently, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that India will soon be the largest manufacturing hub of electric vehicles in the world.
India aims to make 70 percent of all commercial cars, 30 percent of private cars, 40 percent of buses and 80 percent of two-wheelers and three-wheelers electric vehicles by the end of this decade.
3 million charging stations needed in next 9 years
To achieve this goal, India will need a network of around 3 million public EV charging stations over the next nine years. The government’s focus on providing world-class infrastructure and related services for the highway network is expected to yield good returns. Apart from EV charging stations, NHAI is also planning commercial space like restaurants, food courts, retail outlets along the national highways to boost the infrastructure.
