Business Standard quoted preliminary estimates from the Financial Times that every fifth of the vehicles sold in 18 European markets, including the UK, were electric, while sales of diesel cars declined by 19 per cent. According to the report, in December 2021, around 176,000 battery EVs were sold in Western Europe, which has become an all-time high. This is an increase of 6 percent as compared to December 2020. At the same time, European car makers have sold a total of 160,000 diesel cars.
The diesel car market in Europe has been declining steadily since 2015, when Volkswagen was found guilty of cheating on diesel emissions tests. However, despite this, Volkswagen has sold 452,9000 battery-electric vehicles worldwide, up 96 percent compared to 2020.
Recently, Volkswagen claimed that the company is aiming to double the sales of its ID battery electric vehicles in China this year. The company had also said that they aim to perform even better, but lack of semiconductors could affect production.
The company aims to increase that number to about 15 percent this year, or about 500,000 units, though he said that also depends on chip supply conditions.<!–
