6 Airbag in A Car: In order to make vehicles more secure on the roads, 6 airbags are going to be necessary in cars with 8 passengers.
6 Airbag in A Car: In order to make vehicles more safe on the roads, the Road Transport Ministry is preparing to implement new rules. According to the ministry, it will be mandatory to provide at least 6 airbags in the trains which can seat 8 passengers. This rule will be effective from October 2022 this year. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has said in its statement that in order to promote the safety of passengers, it has been decided to enhance the safety features by amending the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.
According to the draft notification issued on January 14, this decision has been taken for the M1 class vehicles. Cars with 5-8 seats are included in this category. According to the new decision of the ministry, now 6 airbags will be necessary in these cars. Cars manufactured from October 1, 2022 will be provided with two side airbags and two side curtain/tube airbags, and one airbag each for outboard seating positions.

These challenges will increase with the new decision
- If six airbags are made mandatory in the car, the safety rating will improve but the prices of the cars may increase. In an entry-level car, the cost of front airbags goes up to Rs 5-10 thousand and if side and curtain airbags are provided, the cost increases. This means that if 6 airbags are mandatory, then 50 thousand rupees more may have to be spent to buy a car.
- With additional airbags provided, another problem may arise with the re-engineering of the car as the existing cars are not designed to this level of safety. Once the six airbags are made necessary, changes may have to be made from the body to the interior of the car for them to do their job effectively. This is also likely to increase the cost.

This is the situation now
Talking about the current situation regarding airbags, no car of Maruti Suzuki, Renault and Nissan has more than two airbags. Most of the car companies that are offering six airbags in their vehicles, most of the models and variants cost more than Rs 10 lakh. In an interview to news agency PTI last year, Gadkari had said that small cars, which are mostly bought by the lower middle class people, should also be provided with adequate airbags. He expressed surprise that auto companies are providing eight airbags only in big cars, which are bought by rich people.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the new decision will ensure the safety of passengers traveling in cars of all segments, no matter how expensive or cheap it is. Gadkari tweeted that the Union Ministry had made the fitment of driver airbags from 1st July 2019 and airbags mandatory for passengers sitting onwards from 1st January 2022.
