In a statement Monday night, officials from Ukraine’s defense intelligence identified the slain general as Vitaly Gerasimov, a major general, chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 41st Army of Russia’s Central Military District. According to the statement, Gerasimov participated in the Second Chechen War from August 1999 to April 2000 and the Russian military operation in Syria.
He further stated that the general had received a medal for the annexation of Crimea. Defense Intelligence further stated that the figures also indicated significant problems with communications in the occupier’s forces and with the evacuation of their broken units.
