Bharat Biotech chairman Krishna Ella and his wife and firm’s cofounder Suchitra Ella were nominated for the civilian awards on the eve of the Republic Day. Krishna Ella and Suchitra Ella will receive Padma Bhushan for their contribution in the field of medicine. Dr Krishna Ella was born in 1969 in Tamil Nadu to a Telugu speaking farmer family. He established a small lab in Hyderabad in 1996 and named it Bharat Biotech. Presently Bharat Biotech is known for its medical research in the country and the world. On the other hand, his wife and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Biotech, Suchitra Ella is a strong pillar of support and guidance at Bharat Biotech. She oversees a wide range of operations at the company and has extensive experience in Customer Operations, Finance, Marketing and Business Development.
Cyrus Poonawalla, founder of Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII), will be honored with the country’s third highest civilian award. Born in 1941 to a Parsi family, Cyrus S Poonawalla is a billionaire businessman and chairman and managing director of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group, which also includes the Serum Institute of India. Presently his son Adar Poonawalla is the CEO of SII. In 2021, Cyrus was ranked 5th in Fortunes’ India rich list with a net worth of $19 billion. He founded SII in 1966 and made it the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer (by dosage).
Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of the board at Tata Sons, is one of the 17 Padma Bhushan awardees this year. The government has announced that Chandrasekaran has received the third highest civilian award in the business and trade category. Known as the Marathon Man, Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Consultancy Group in 1987 as an intern, and worked 30 years from there to rise to the top position in the business group. Under his supervision, the Tata Group has re-entered the aviation sector by acquiring former national carrier Air India. However, Chandrasekaran has achieved many achievements during his tenure in the Tata Group.
Satya Narayan Nadella (born 19 August 1967) is an Indian-American business executive. He is the Executive Chairman and CEO of Microsoft. Prior to becoming CEO, he was executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group, overseeing the building and running of the company’s computing platform. Nadella was born into a Telugu-speaking Hindu family in Hyderabad, present-day Telangana, India. His mother Prabhavati was a Sanskrit lecturer and his father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, was an IAS officer of 1962 batch. Before joining Microsoft in 1992, Nadella worked at Sun Microsystems as a member of its technical staff.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai will also be honored with Padma Bhushan. Pichai Sundararajan born on 10 June 1972, better known as Sundar Pichai, is an Indian-American business executive. That Alphabet Inc. and is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its subsidiary company Google. Born in Madras, India, Pichai earned a degree in metallurgical engineering from IIT Kharagpur. Moving to America, he completed M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University and further MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and Palmer Scholar, respectively. Pichai started his career as a material engineer. After a short stint at the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, Pichai joined Google in 2004.
The country’s fourth highest civilian award will be given to Prahlad Rai Agarwal, executive chairman of the Padma Shri knitwear company. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Calcutta. He is also the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Colombia. According to the Roopa company website, he gives strategic direction to the company and is the driving force behind the company’s establishment and growth. He has more than 40 years of experience in the textile industry. The website stated that he has been a member of the Board of Directors since 6 February 1985. Agarwal was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 7th Reed & Taylor Awards for Retail Excellence organized by the Asia Retail Congress, 2011.
Senior journalist and educationist Jagjit Singh Dardi (Editor-in-Chief of Chardilkala, and Chairman of Sri Guru Harkrishna Public School and Chardilkala Time TV) will be honored with the Padma Shri award. Dardi will be awarded for his dedicated services in promoting national integration, communal harmony, exemplary contribution in the field of media, education and promotion of Punjabi language, culture and heritage. He started his career in his teens to build a Punjabi speaking state. On June 22, 1960, he was arrested from Dukhnivaran Sahib at the age of 12 for participating in the Punjabi Suba Movement. Dardi has a vast experience of 62 years and has rendered remarkable service in the field of media and became a member of Press/Media Advisory Committees of Lok Sabha in 1997-98 and Rajya Sabha in 2014.
The name of famous diamond businessman Savji Dholakia of Surat city of Gujarat is also included in the list of Padma Awards for 2022 released by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The businessman has been honored with the Padma Shri award for the year 2022. Dholakia is known to spend crores of rupees on his employees by giving them huge bonuses and gifts every year. He has gifted cars to around 600 of his employees. Savjibhai Dholakia also known as Savjikaka in Surat and Saurashtra hails from Dudhla village in Amreli district. Dholakia dropped out of school at the age of 13 and came to Surat in 1977 with Rs 12.5 in his pocket. In 2014, his company recorded a turnover of Rs 400 crore, which is 104% higher than the previous year.
