Kerala Health Minister Veena George told reporters on Wednesday that antibodies against Nipah virus have been found in samples from two varieties of bats. The National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune had collected samples of different types of bats from Kozhikode, where a case example of Nipah infection was reported this year, in which a 12-year-old youth died of the virus on September 5. George reported that tests from two varieties of the mammal indicated the presence of IgG antibodies against Nipah. The remaining samples were also being tested by the laboratory and the results would be available soon.

A central team was sent to the state after a 12-year-old child died of Nipah virus infection in Kerala’s Kozhikode district. Samples were taken from the body of the victim boy and he was sent to the National Institute of Virology Pune (NIV Pune) where the presence of Nipah virus was confirmed in him. The victim’s family had claimed that the child ate Rambutan fruit and after that his health deteriorated.
Then on 27 August, the child was diagnosed with Nipah virus in Kozhikode. He was first admitted to a local clinic. He was later taken to a private hospital, from where he was brought to the Medical College Hospital. He was later admitted to a private hospital, where he died. According to experts, when the bat eats fruits, its saliva gets on those fruits. This is how Nipah virus spreads.
