Online fraud cases have increased significantly since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. If we talk about phishing websites, since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 5,000 epidemic-related phishing websites have come to the fore, which were designed to steal the information of users through fake payment offers and discounted Covid tests etc.
In recent times, frauds involving phishing ads for restaurants and public events with fake QR codes and vaccination certificates have become quite popular. Kaspersky researchers observed that there was a slight decline in the actions of cybercriminals in June. During this month, Kaspersky Products detected 14 percent more pandemic-related phishing websites than in May. which have been closed.
In most pandemic-related fraud, cybercriminals aim to obtain users’ data, said Alexey Marchenko, head of content filtering methods development at research firm Kaspersky. Phishing is often used for this, a user follows a link in an advertisement or email and goes to a page where they are asked to enter personal information and bank card details. Marchenko said, once they have this information, they steal money from your account.
There has been an increase in the number of phishing attacks related to COVID tests and vaccinations. Cybercriminals are always on the lookout for opportunities to plan their attacks and keep pace with the current trends which can help them to attract more attention of their potential victims.
