Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with senior Taliban delegation
A Taliban delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday. This meeting is taking place at a time when there is an atmosphere of concern in Beijing that the activities of East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) are increasing to create Uyghur state. At the same time, nothing has been said about the meeting from the Chinese side or the Taliban. Several pictures of Wang with the Taliban delegation have surfaced on social media. In this, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen can also be seen.
The South China Morning Post quoted sources familiar with the development as saying that Baradar met with Wang in the northern city of Tianjin in China. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is the head of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar and also the chief negotiator for talks with the US. This is the first time that senior Taliban leaders have visited China. This visit is taking place at a time when the Taliban has taken violent action to capture a large part of Afghanistan. Taliban action has increased since the withdrawal of American and NATO forces. China hosted a delegation of the Taliban in 2019, which met with Afghanistan’s special envoy Deng Jijun.
China has already participated in talks with Taliban
Chinese officials had previously participated in talks with the Taliban along with representatives from Afghanistan, the US and Pakistan. But this resulted in no progress in efforts to find a political solution. At a meeting with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts in June, Wang vowed to bring the Taliban back into the political mainstream and offered to host intra-Afghan peace talks. In a meeting between Wang and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi in China on 24 July, the two sides agreed to take joint action to deal with the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan.
Wang Yi said this about Afghanistan
China’s state media quoted Wang as saying that China and Pakistan are facing the direct effects of the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. Both countries are engaged in efforts to stop the civil war in Afghanistan, so that peace can be restored. Wang said the two countries would jointly combat terrorism, all major forces in Afghanistan would be encouraged to take a clear stance on terror, take strict action against terrorist forces such as the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) and Afghanistan. will be prevented from becoming a haven for terror.
