Pratap Bose
Mahindra & Mahindra has roped in Pratap Bose, former design head of Tata Motors, to head its newly formed global design organization as the company may bring in a new portfolio of the brand in the next few years. Bose was instrumental in designing the Tiago hatchback, Nexon and Safari sports utility vehicles, driving Tata Motors’ sales growth as the company became the country’s third largest carmaker by the end of March 2021.
In contrast, Mahindra & Mahindra has lost market share to rivals like Hyundai, Kia and Tata Motors in recent years. Tata Motors passenger vehicle sales increased by 69 percent to 222,025 units at the end of March 2021. Mahindra & Mahindra’s PV sales declined by 16 per cent to 157,216 units during the same period.
Bose will get this responsibility
The Mumbai-based maker of the Scorpio SUV announced last month that it plans to set up a new advanced design center in the West Midlands, UK. Mahindra Advanced Design Center Europe (MADE) will be part of the global design organization along with Mahindra India Design Studio (MIDS), which will be led by Bose as Executive Vice President and Chief Design Officer.
Bose will be responsible for both MADE and MIDS and will oversee the design of all key business segments of Mahindra – SUVs, upcoming “Bourne Electric Vehicles”, light commercial vehicles, large CVs, Peugeot scooter business in France as well as tractors and agricultural machines do. He will join on June 24, 2021 and report to Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director, Auto and Agriculture Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra.
Bose, an alumnus of the Royal College of Art in London and the National Institute of Design, India, has over two decades of automotive design experience. He spent 14 years with Tata Motors and has previously worked with Piaggio, Italy and DaimlerChrysler, Japan.
While Bose said goodbye to Tata Motors on April 29, the Tata group has already announced the European Technical Center’s head of design, Martin Uhlrich, as his replacement.
