Iran’s state television has reported that the country’s former firebrand president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is going to be in the fray once again.
Symbolic picture
On June 18, the 13th Presidential Election will be held in Iran. The Guardian Council will announce the names of the contenders for the post of President. The council of 12 members consists of six clerics and six attorneys. The Guardian Council is not going to announce the names of the candidates till May 27. On Tuesday, dozens of people were seen sitting behind computers in the country’s home ministry and registering. To get the registration done, it was compulsory for the people to apply masks. Potential candidates have time to register for the election by Saturday.
Meanwhile, Iran’s state television has reported that the country’s former firebrand president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is going to be in the fray once again. Ahmadinejad reached the Ministry of Home Affairs with a crowd of his supporters and got his registration done. In recent years, Ahmadinejad has carved out his image as a central candidate rather than hardline. In 2017 elections, the country’s Supreme Leader Importollah Ali Khamenei (Ahatinejad) banned Ahmadinejad from contesting elections. However, this time he has said that he will not oppose any candidate.
Everyone is eyeing these candidates as well
It has been told in media reports that the current judiciary chief Abraham Raisi is also going to contest the presidential election. Even in 2017, he came into the field, but he lost to Hassan Ruhani. If Raisi comes on the field, he can be the top contender for this post. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is also going to contest the election. In the last election, he withdrew the nomination, supporting Raisi. But this time he has said that he is not going to do this. Apart from this, two big military officers of the country like Hossein Dehghan and Saeed Mohammad are also in the field.
5.9 crore people will cast their vote
According to Iran’s election headquarters, about 59 million people are eligible to vote in the elections to be held on June 18. Out of this, 14 lakh people will cast their vote for the first time. However, many analysts believe that voter turnout is going to be less this time. After Saturday, the Guardian Council will review the candidates and will release the final list for the election on May 27. It is believed that a large number of candidates’ names will be removed, as it has already happened. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, so far no woman has been selected to contest the presidential election.
The atmosphere of the candidates’ qualifications got heated
At present, the atmosphere is hot about the qualification of candidates in Iran. Earlier this week, the council unilaterally announced a number of conditions with the stated goal of pulling out ineligible candidates. It was mandatory for the candidates to be in the age group of 40 to 75 years. Apart from this, having at least four years of experience in senior executive leadership is also considered necessary. Due to these rules, the names of many prominent candidates can be excluded from the list. The name of Minister Mohammad Jawad Ajari Jahromi is also included in this.
